direction and in touch with various overseas companies to implement environmental friendly technologies. the
target of Tata Steel is reduce emission of CO2 by 20% and carbon net zero by 2070 as the target given by the
hon’able PM of India. tata Steel is also trying to use all electrical equipment run at full efficiency so that specific
power consumption reduces. Wherever possible electrical lights are replaced with solar lights, vehicles running
in fossil fuels are being replaced by photovoltaic operated vehicles, use of hydrogen fuel and bio-mass is under
discussion.
During discussion, Mr. Jayanta chatterjee mentioned that in tata Steel the Sukinda mines was started by one
American geologist and what he predicted during that time is coming true. As you go deeper in the mine you will
find Nickel in sulphite form, palladium, etc. and he requested Dr. Bhoi to give his views and to probe deeply when
IMMt Bhubaneswar does the research. Dr. Bhoi agreed to the prediction made by the American geologist that
was mentioned by Mr. Chatterjee – in Sukinda as we mine and go deeper and deeper the Ni percentage is going
up and up. He has also showed the lateritic ore is rich in Ni and is more than 1%. But Dr. Bhoi mentioned that
during mining all ores are kept at the same place but should have been kept at different stock depending on the
percentage of Nickel but it is difficult to do because of land problem. In COB there are two major issues one is land
and other is Chrome 6 issue. At IMMT, they are trying to neutralize it and recover all metal and with the slag they
are making cement so that there is no waste at all. he also mentioned that at IMMt they have produced steel from
iron ore fines utilizing hydrogen through Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction Process with zero CO2 emission
though the electricity used to make hydrogen is not green. this technology is available with IMMt, Bhubaneswar
on which they are working since 2010. they have successfully done at 10 Kg scale and trying to make at 100 Kg
scale so that techno-economic feasibility can be studied. For doing this IMMt needs support from organisations
such as tata Steel, SAIl, Ministry of Steel and cSIR organisations also. With their support IMMt, Bhubaneswar
can have the process which not only produce green but clean steel also as it contains less amount of Phosphorous
and Sulphur due to non-use of coal in this process. Dr.Bhoi also mentioned that at IMMt they are also working on
making green ferroalloys. Mr. Ritolia summed up by saying whether we like it or not at the end of the day it has
to be green energy for the sustenance of the industry. If we don’t do that the industry has to close down. then he
thrown open the floor to the audience for any question / suggestions.
Mr. J. K. Chatterjee and a question from the audience
It generated a lot of interest and some questions with regard to road map of GoI for achieving net zero by 2070,
future prices etc. were asked and deliberated. Mr. Ritolia gave details of the roadmap of GoI on types of power
generation with capacity, Mr. V S Rao also expressed his views and the positive outcome of the seminar and the
session ended with a vote of thank
