Our Tribute to Ratan Naval Tata
[A Visionary, Transformer, Nation-Builder, Philanthropist
IN LOVING MEMORY
and a Humble Gentleman]
RATAN NAVAL TATA
(28 December 1937 – 09 October 2024)
We are deeply saddened with the demise of our beloved and respected industrialist Shri
Ratan Naval Tata on 9th October 2024 at Mumbai, India. We had covered his achievements
and contributions to the Industry and society in our first issue of STEELTECH, in August 2006
under ‘Men that Matter’.
Ratan Tata received Padma Bhushan, the third civilian honour in India in 2000 followed by
the Padma Vibhushan the second highest civilian honour, in the year 2008. He received
several honours from many other institutions/countries around the world.
Ratan Tata after his education at USA and subsequent training, joined the Tata Group in the
year 1962. He served as the chairman of Tata Sons, the Tata Group’s holding company, from
1991 to 2012. He also served as interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017.
He held the positions of chairman Emeritus of Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy
Services, Tata Power, Tata Global Beverages, Taj Group and Tata Teleservices. He left a legacy
of prudence and expansion, both as chairman of Tata Sons and as chairman emeritus of Tata
Trusts. His leadership principles are expected to continue shaping the group for long.
Tata implemented a number of policies and building the Tata group brand. He prioritized
innovation and delegated many responsibilities to younger talents. Under his leadership,
overlapping operations between subsidiaries were streamlined into company-wide
operations, with the group exiting unrelated businesses to take on globalization. During
the 21 years Tata led the Tata Group, revenue grew over 40 times, and profit over 50 times.
Under his leadership, Tata Tea acquired Tetley, Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover, and
Tata Steel acquired Corus. These acquisitions repositioned Tata from a largely India-
centric group into a global business, with over 65% of revenues coming from operations
and sales internationally.
Many of us in STEEL TECH had the opportunity to serve the industry under his leadership.
The entire team of STEEL TECH join in praying to the Almighty to grant the departed soul of
Ratan Tata to rest in peace, and give his family/friends and the Tata group enough strength
and courage to bear this irreparable loss.
